Chair Yoga: More Than Just Poses in a Chair by Vanessa Nevarez

If you have tried yoga before, but never really stuck to a regular practice maybe you need to try different styles of yoga. There are plenty of types of yoga out there from Ashtanga, Bikram, Vinyasa, Kundalini and the list goes on. Chair yoga is another form that is slowly making its way into the yoga world. I have personally seen how chair yoga can really benefit your mind, body and spirit. I have been teaching yoga since 2016 and teaching chair yoga for about a year now. I have seen how it can really change a person’s mood and uplift their spirit. Even just by doing a short ten to thirty minute practice. I first taught chair yoga to Elementary school teachers and they were tired and stressed after school ready to go home for the day. After a chair yoga class of breathing, stretching and connecting to themselves, I noticed a shift in the energy in the room. I remember seeing them more relaxed and them sharing with me how they were less irritable and ready for a calm drive home they said it helped them to slow down. We could all use some relaxation and a safe space to slow our bodies and minds down. Chair yoga gives us this opportunity to slow down and connect to oneself again. There are huge benefits from doing chair yoga including reduced stress, improved strength and flexibility and it is easier on the joints. Chair yoga can be done anywhere, all you need is a chair and an open mind. There are many more benefits from chair yoga that I would like to share with you in the future and in a class as well.
